COUNTY SEAT: Lyons, N.Y. 14489
Located in the northwest corner of Wayne County, the Town of
Ontario is 20 miles from downtown Rochester. It borders Lake
Ontario on the north and shares boundaries with the Town of
Webster (to the west), Town of Walworth (to the south) and Town
of Williamson (to the east).
The Town of Ontario is one of the three fastest
growing communities in Wayne County based on its
proximity to major employers in Monroe County Xerox
Corporation's manufacturing center is 10 minutes away in Webster
and at several other Monroe County sites. Tenneco's Plastic
Division (formerly Mobil Chemical), is based in the Village of
Macedon, 10 miles south of Ontario. Eastman Kodak Company calls
Rochester home, as does Gleason Works and Bausch & Lomb.
Other major employers include General Motors, Sybron, the
University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology,
Rochester Gas & Electric Corp., and Frontier Telephone.
Ontario is home to the Ginna Nuclear Power Station operated
by Constellation Energy Corporation. Several specialized
business establishments also call the Town of Ontario home.
Two industrial parks and ample industrial and commercial land
provide opportunities for new and expanded businesses.
Agriculture, for many years a dominant industry in the
township, continues to provide local employment in some fruit
growing and dairy operations. Wayne County is the nation's third
largest producer of apples and other fruits.
Steady growth has continued with a current population of over
9,000 residents. New home construction continues at a steady
pace. Easy access to cultural activities, educational resources,
hospitals and large shopping centers in Greater Rochester and
the interstate highway system is provided by NYS Route 104, a
divided, 4-lane highway. Access to the New York State Thruway is
also easily obtained at the Manchester, Victor, and Henrietta
exits.
Both town and school district programs provide ample
recreational services for persons of all ages. Ontario maintains
and operates a 66 acre town park. A boat launch is available for resident use only at a town-owned
harbor on Lake Ontario.
Ontario residents are proud of their rural heritage and of
the progressive community in which they reside today.
Service groups, fraternal organizations and community groups
provide varied services and programs for local families and
residents.
